Choosing between shrink labels and pressure-sensitive labels is one of the most consequential packaging decisions a product manufacturer makes. How Each Technology Works

Shrink labels are printed on a tubular film (PET, OPS, or PVC) that is placed over the container and heated. The film contracts to conform precisely to the container’s shape, producing a 360-degree label with no exposed seams.

Pressure-sensitive labels (PSLs) are pre-cut labels with a release liner and adhesive backing. They are applied via labeling machine or by hand and adhere on contact. No heat, no activation. The adhesive does the work.

When to Choose Shrink Sleeves

Choose shrink labels when:

  • Your container has a unique or irregular shape that is part of your brand identity

  • You need full-coverage graphics to compete at retail

  • The product requires integrated tamper evidence

  • You are running high volumes where per-unit cost efficiency matters

When to Choose Pressure-Sensitive

Choose pressure-sensitive when:

  • Your container is a standard flat-sided shape

  • You are constrained on packaging tooling budgets

  • You need to turn around label changes quickly
