PET Shrink Sleeves and Tamper Seals: Why More Brands Are Making the Switch
For decades, PVC dominated the heat shrink packaging market. It was cheap, easy to print, and reliably shrinkable. But PET (polyethylene terephthalate) has emerged as the preferred film for brands that care about sustainability, recyclability, and long-term shelf performance. If you are specifying shrink sleeves or tamper-evident seals and haven’t recently evaluated PET, here is what you need to know.
Recyclability
The most significant driver of PET adoption is recyclability. Standard PVC shrink sleeves are not compatible with PET bottle recycling streams. When a PVC-sleeved PET bottle enters a recycling facility, the PVC film contaminates the recycled PET resin.
PET shrink sleeves, when formulated correctly with a density below 1.0 g/cm³, allow the entire package to move through the PET recycling stream without contamination. This is increasingly relevant as major retailers and regulatory bodies in the EU, UK, and North America set recyclability targets for packaging.
Print Quality
PET film offers exceptional optical clarity, the kind of glass-like transparency that makes colors appear vivid and sharp on shelf. PET also holds tight registration well across high-speed print runs, making it reliable for complex artwork with fine details or precise color matching.
Performance
PET film performs better than PVC in demanding environments:
Higher chemical resistance, suitable for cleaning agents, solvents, acidic beverages
Better temperature stability, handles hot-fill applications and cold chain distribution
No plasticizer migration. PVC requires plasticizers that can migrate into fatty or oily products. PET contains none, simplifying food-contact regulatory documentation.
When PET Is the Right Choice
PET is preferred when:
Your brand has recyclability commitments or operates in markets with sustainability regulations
Your product is hot-filled, cold-distributed, or contains chemicals that could interact with plasticized films
You want the highest available print clarity for premium shelf presentation
You need food-contact material compliance without plasticizer concerns
PVC remains cost-effective for applications where recyclability is not a priority and the fill environment is standard.
